THE CHRISTIAN MARTYRS OF THE ROMAN GAUL

Blandine de Lyon, Symphorien d'Autun, Denis de Paris, Saturnin de Toulouse, Foy d'Agen, Victor de Marseille, Pons de Nice, Julien de Brioude… Like the whole of the Roman Empire, Gaul had its Christian martyrs , sometimes counting among the most honored saints from church to church in the Middle Ages. However, most of the texts describing the tortures inflicted on the characters in question are late. Tradition rather quickly took precedence over historical accuracy, with a clear objective: to unite around models to venerate the Christian community thanks to the favor of the edicts of tolerance of the fourth century.
