CHRONOLOGY OF THE ROMAN GAUL

A subject little discussed in this form, the history of Roman Gaul is treated here in event-driven form (where the most reliable facts on the chronological level are privileged). From the beginnings of the Roman conquest (annexation by the legions of the south-east of the country from -125) until the final establishment of the great barbarian kingdoms (second half of the 5th century), including the Gallic Wars and the “Roman peace”, nearly six centuries of history are revisited here. The author goes through a dense history, strewn with important characters (Caius Marius, Julius Caesar, Vercingétorix, Augustus, Claude, Hadrian, Constantine, Saint Martin, Attila ...) or emblematic and sometimes recurring sites, whether they are places of battles or cities that have focused the attention of ancient authors such as Caesar, Suetonius, Tacitus or Ausone (Narbonne, Marseille, Alésia, Lyon, Vienne, Arles, Fréjus, Lutèce / Paris, Autun, Reims…).
