Gladiators ... this word resonates in every head as the symbol of the violence and decadence of the Roman Empire and conveys many clichés about Antiquity and its fighters. Gladiators ... What did their life look like? Why choose to fight on the arena? How did their career end, their existence...? So many questions that have found approximate answers, often unsatisfactory, fed by preconceived ideas.

Gallo-Roman France was covered with aqueducts, because the civilization of the time had a great need for water, not only for thermal baths, but also for hydraulic power. This sometimes required fetching water tens of kilometers from large cities, such as Lyon or Nîmes, for example, in order to meet their needs. There are still today many vestiges of the aqueducts, the most famous of which is the Pont du Gard, which served to supply Nîmes, with water collected more than 130 kilometers from the city. This gives an idea of the work carried out by the Gallo-Romans. The thermal baths themselves were numerous and present in every town, although few examples remain in elevation today.

Who is the Roman woman, and by extension, Gallo-Roman? This booklet teaches you by answering all your questions about her social status, her role in civil society and within the household, her health, her beauty and Roman fashions in clothing, hairstyle, jewelry and clothing. perfumes. Alongside the matron, or mother, appear other women, especially the
servants, who can be free, freed or slaves, but also the young girls of the house, the nurses, the mourners, as well as artists, midwives and even doctors. Some of them even have a political role, the empresses who are very present with their husbands and who can maneuver behind the scenes for their lineage, like Livia for her son Tiberius, or Agrippina for Nero.

CHRONOLOGY OF THE ROMAN GAUL

Delivery weight: 0.3 kg

A subject little discussed in this form, the history of Roman Gaul is treated here in event-driven form (where the most reliable facts on the chronological level are privileged). From the beginnings of the Roman conquest (annexation by the legions of the south-east of the country from -125) until the final establishment of the great barbarian kingdoms (second half of the 5th century), including the Gallic Wars and the “Roman peace”, nearly six centuries of history are revisited here. The author goes through a dense history, strewn with important characters (Caius Marius, Julius Caesar, Vercingétorix, Augustus, Claude, Hadrian, Constantine, Saint Martin, Attila ...) or emblematic and sometimes recurring sites, whether they are places of battles or cities that have focused the attention of ancient authors such as Caesar, Suetonius, Tacitus or Ausone (Narbonne, Marseille, Alésia, Lyon, Vienne, Arles, Fréjus, Lutèce / Paris, Autun, Reims…).

One of the major changes in Roman times in Gaul was the spread of writing. If writing, contrary to a legend, is already known to the Gauls, its uses are diversified to the point of involving most areas of daily life: crafts and commerce, administration, literature, religious practices.

THE CHRISTIAN MARTYRS OF THE ROMAN GAUL

Blandine de Lyon, Symphorien d'Autun, Denis de Paris, Saturnin de Toulouse, Foy d'Agen, Victor de Marseille, Pons de Nice, Julien de Brioude… Like the whole of the Roman Empire, Gaul had its Christian martyrs , sometimes counting among the most honored saints from church to church in the Middle Ages. However, most of the texts describing the tortures inflicted on the characters in question are late. Tradition rather quickly took precedence over historical accuracy, with a clear objective: to unite around models to venerate the Christian community thanks to the favor of the edicts of tolerance of the fourth century.
