Large and fascinating mosaic decorated with a skull, a plumb line, a wheel and various other elements.

The original piece, small in size (41x47 cm), was discovered in 1874 in the villa "of masons" in Pompeii. Today, it is presented to the public at the Archaeological Museum of Naples.

This mosaic is full of symbolism. It illustrates the phrase "Memento Mori": "Remember that you are mortal!". A skull recalls the ultimate destiny of man. On the left, the purple (red) clothes recall the wealth in ancient times. On the right, the rags refer to poverty. It all comes down to one sentence: whatever the condition of men (rich or poor), all are mortal. The whole is supported and balanced by the square and the plumb line of the mason found on the Roman sarcophagi, as well as, more recently, in the symbolism of Freemasonry.
Very often represented in the painting, the motif of the human skull invites a meditation on death. The mosaic also presents the Wheel of "Fortuna" which, when it turns, can make the rich a poor, and vice versa.

All around are represented fishes and mollusks (fishes, octopuses, sea urchins, ...). This mosaic dated from the end of the 2nd or the beginning of the 3rd century AD, was found in the so-called "Cascade house" in Utique (Tunisia).

The original mosaic was discovered in the great roman villa of Nennig, in Germany. This mosaic belonged to a collection including a great mosaic measuring more than 160 m2, representing fights in the amphitheater.

Reproduction of a large mosaic decorated with a fight scene with a tiger chased by a femal gladiator. The Venator could be a gladiator dressed in the Amazon. Above the tiger, the Greek letter symbolizes death. This means that the animal has been killed by its opponent. In the upper right corner, the text refers to the games that took place in 158 AD. JC. under the reign of Antoninus Pius.

This mosaic comes from the Castra Praetoria in Rome and is kept in the Colosseum. It is dated to the second century AD.
