In 1309, the archbishop of Bordeaux, Bertrand de Got, elected in 1305 under the name of pope Clement V decides to install the papacy in Avignon to flee the troubles that agitate Rome. Until 1403, its eight successors reside in this city, making Avignon the new capital of Christendom.
